Outdoor sowing (April/May)- choose a sunny position and sow thinly direct into finely raked, moist, warm, weed-free soil, 6mm (¼") deep. Germination 10-21 days. Thin seedlings by degrees to a final spacing of 25-30cm (10-12"). Indoor sowing (April/May/Early June)- in pots or trays in a windowsill propagator or greenhouse at 15-20C (60-68F), 6mm (¼") deep in finely sieved, moist compost. Transplant seedlings into trays 5cm (2") apart and grow on prior to planting out.

Grow in a warm position in full sun, water well whilst establishing although avoid getting water on the leaves and stems which can cause botrytis. Pinch out the growing tip when young to encourage bushiness. Dead-head flowers regularly to encourage the production of more blooms. Tall varieties may need staking.
